WHAT IS PERLITE?

Perlite is a volcanic glass that is mined and heated up to 1000 degrees celsius until it expands. It then becomes the small white particles known as perlite which can be used as a stand alone medium or mixed with soil.

THE BENEFITS OF USING PERLITE

When mixed with soil or coco, perlite will prevent the medium from becoming compacted. When the growing media is not condensed more oxygen can get to the plants roots meaning healthier, stronger plants. Lack of oxygen and excess moisture in a plants roots zone can lead to diseases such as root rot or mould. Keeping the roots of a plant oxygenated is very important. 

Preventing the media from getting compacted by using perlite also helps with drainage.

Perlite is non fibrous which means it is safe to use. It is chemically inert and sterile.

Perlite is irregular in shape and has many small crevices. When you water your plants with a  nutrient solution the crevices create a capillary function which aids in absorption. 

Perlite can also be used as a medium for getting cuttings to root. Moisten the perlite and place it in a sealable plastic bag to about one third full.  Put the cut ends of the cuttings up to the node in the perlite and then fill the rest of the bag with air and seal it. Leave alone until roots approx 1/2 to 1 inch have formed and then plant the cuttings into their permanent home.
